Photography Workshop

Since the beginning of 2017 we have a monthly column in South Africa’s oldest surviving independent newspaper, Grocott’s Mail. You can read more about the project in our blog post about the first school term.

Thus, when Grocott’s offered a photography workshop for its community partners, we got an invitation. It took place at the African Media Matrix building at Rhodes University and was held by Mia van der Merwe, who is a professional photographer and a photography teacher at the University’s School of Journalism.

Her presentation covered the basics of lighting and framing, but the main focus was on practical tips about taking good photos in bad conditions. Part of that was how to make the most out of a small camera like the one in your phone, following the motto: “The best camera is the one that’s with you!”

Chiara and I were very glad to be able to attend the workshop and learned quite a few things that we will try to put in practice from now on.
