Work readiness workshop in preparation of a new year

At Awarenet, we are driven by the belief that access to knowledge can transform lives. In line with our mission to empower individuals, we hosted a Work Readiness Workshop for the organisation’s Social Employment Fund participants at the Joza Youth Hub in January. This three-day event was tailored to support individuals in gaining the confidence, skills, and knowledge they need to embark on successful career journeys.
The workshop was a resounding success, offering practical tools and insights for participants to navigate the workforce effectively. From the vibrant energy that filled the room to the impactful sessions, the experience was both empowering and inspiring.

Day 1: Building a Strong Foundation
The first day focused on workplace ethics, codes of practice, and labour legislation. Through
engaging discussions and real-world scenarios, participants explored workers’ and employers’
rights, workplace expectations, and best practices. A peer-review discussion style fostered
collaboration, allowing attendees to connect legislation with its practical applications. An
open Q&A session offered personalized advice, making the learning experience interactive
and highly relevant. Many participants shared how this deepened their understanding of their
rights and responsibilities in the workplace.

Day 2: Practical Skill Development
The second day shifted towards equipping participants with essential skills, as identified
during Day 1. The focus was on CV and resume writing, where participants learned how to
effectively highlight their strengths and experiences. Presenters guided attendees through
crafting professional resumes, followed by feedback sessions where individuals received
tailored advice to improve their documents. This hands-on approach ensured that participants
left with actionable insights and improved confidence in presenting themselves to potential
employers.

Day 3: Personalized CV Editing
The workshop concluded with a practical session in our open computer labs, fully equipped
with free internet access for community members. Participants brought in their draft
CVs (whether handwritten or digital) and worked with facilitators to refine and tailor them
to specific job opportunities.
Facilitators provided guidance on:

  • Spelling and grammar checks
  • Appropriate tone and professional formatting
  • Utilizing free or affordable platforms for designing polished CVs

The event concluded on a high note with participants actively networking and collaborating.
They connected, exchanged contact details, and fostered meaningful relationships that could
serve as valuable support in their job-seeking journeys.

Key Outcomes
The workshop achieved its mission of empowerment through several impactful outcomes.
Participants reported enhanced confidence, feeling better prepared to apply for jobs and
present themselves professionally. They left with polished, job-specific resumes that
effectively showcased their strengths and aligned with employer expectations. Additionally,
they gained a deeper understanding of workplace rights, ethics, and expectations, equipping
them with the knowledge needed to navigate their career journeys successfully. One
participant shared, “I now feel much more confident in personalizing my CV and resume for
employment. The discussions, practical writing sessions, and peer reviews were a game-
changer for me.”

Looking Ahead
The success of this workshop marks just the beginning of Awarenet’s commitment to
transforming lives. We are proud to empower our community members, equipping them with
the tools to thrive not only during their time with us but also as they move forward in their
careers. We extend heartfelt thanks to our dedicated facilitators and inspiring participants for
making this event possible. Together, we’re building a future where knowledge opens doors
and transforms communities. Stay tuned for more impactful programs from Awarenet!
