The Joza Youth Hub’s computer lab

I call it the “Brain” of the Joza Youth Hub (JYH); it knows so much, gives so much, and is so much more.

The computer lab was sponsored by Rhodes University and has been installed in the JYH for a while, but it was missing an Internet connection for a long time. Improper use also affected the computers. So, we made a effort and – together with our partner eKhaya ICT – we put in some maintenance work at the beginning of this year after another partner in the hub AMP! with our assistance had erected a pole and installed the antenna for the Internet connection.

The lab now and again consists of 14 functioning computers, all working with the OS (Operating System) Edubuntu, Libre Office and loads more programmes. There is a printer, scanner, copy machine and a projector. The lab has a fully functional Intranet, an awarenet server and access to the Internet network. As a result, the lab became a regularly used room by various partners in the hub. It has proven to be a very giving room.

Lukas, our current volunteer from Germany serves as our in house awarenet trainer. I myself am responsible for bookings, updates and small fixes.

Other organisations use the lab for their own projects: Upstart, a newspaper organisation and Rhodes University’s Community Engagement (RUCE) teach basic computer skills. The Access Music Programme (AMP!), a music organization, will use the room for their music training in the near future. Finally, the JYH Reading Club will be using the lab for extended research purposes, soon.

Through the awarenet programme, nearby schools such as SDA Primary School, Nombulelo SS and Archie Mbolekwa Primary School get access to the computer lab. The VSA also teaches Upstart learners on a weekly basis. Learners are usually 13 – 16 years old.

The computer have become an important and indispensable feature of our lives. Ever since its invention a few decades ago and the subsequent introduction of the Internet, it has become an essential tool for many students and adults alike, so we are proud to train the community in its use and give access to knowledge and opportunity!

This is a great place to be, don’t miss it!!
