The World Robotics Olympiad Provincial Competition took place this year in Makhanda and Awarenet didn’t miss the opportunity to bring the newly obtained skills of the learners in coding programming to the test. Teams of different schools and organisations from across the province including Awarenet learners from CM Vellem Primary and Makana Primary School competed against each other trying to program the robots the correct way.
One of the goal of the learners is to move different objects on the mat to their correct destination using only the robots which acquires not only a lot of focus, concentration and communication but most importantly teamwork and mutual agreement. All of the learners from each team have to work together as all share the same goals and only through consultation it is possible to really raise the odds of winning.
It was obvious that the Awarenet learners had great fun but simultaneously were determined in winning as each team represents their own school. Therefore every team took not only the competition but also the preparation for it very seriously, resulting in high level performances of all teams.
Unfortunately, due to stiff competition our learners didn’t qualify for the national competition – though they all received diplomas for good placements in the competition. However, though the Provincial Robotics Olympiad Competition is about each of the different teams competing against each other, the main focus of Awarenet lays in the journey not the destination. Our tutors train the learners to sustainably improve their skills and knowledge and to have fun doing so. While competitions are a great tool to bring the newly gained methods to the test, they are only a part of the training pathway of the learners. The main goal of Awarenet when it comes to Robotics and Coding is not to get the learners to win every competition but to provide fun and educational courses where all learners can explore the exciting new world of coding which might provide many opportunities for them in the future.
