Awarenet has been accepted to be part of an exiting maths program run by Olico, a South African organisation with an impressive track record in improving the maths skills of learners across the country. Awarenet will receive funding and training for maths tutors to teach groups of grade 8 and 9 learners using innovative technology and teaching methods.
The trainers will teach the children with the help of an online platform with interactive maths questions and videos. This chimes well with Awarenet’s practice of blending technology and human interaction in its learning environment.
The funding will enable us to recruit more learners to our core group program and to offer these learners qualified tutors in a subject most learners tell us they struggle with. Mathematics is consistently what comes up on top when we ask our learners in which subject they are in need of additional support – a result of the South African schooling system in general generating very poor outcomes in numerical skills in comparison with many other countries.
We are therefore thrilled to be able to offer old and new learners this extra support in 2022 in an extended program where we will work closely with our partner organsiation Inkululeko. The opportunity and the funding to be part of the Olico Maths program would not have been possible without the involvement of our long-standing funder The Learning Trust – we are really happy they trust our capacity to make a difference in the lives of children and youth in Makhanda.
