Makhanda, South Africa meets Syracuse, New York!

Awarenet has started an exciting partnership with a school and university on the other side of the world! Learners from ITC high school in the city of Syracuse in New York, United States will meet regularly with Awarenet high school learners through two state-of-the-art video portals starting from September 2021.

A sequel to this initiative sponsored by Syracuse University was the Race, Space and the Environment Symposium held online on the 23 April with participants from both South Africa and United States. Awarenet learners from grade 11 and 12 also took part in the online discussion after the symposium, being present with laptops in different rooms at the Joza Youth Hub.

Our high school learners were thrilled to be able to take part in the event, and asked the “big-shot” panel guests many probing questions around issues such as capitalism, colonialism and racism. They are all looking forward to interact with high school learners in Syracuse, in spite of the pandemic and restrictions on travel the use of technology still allows us to meet across continents! A special thank to Professor Ken Harper at the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University for initiating and carrying forward this project.

We will tell you all more about this transcontinental cooperation once the video portals are up and running in September!
