awarenet was selected as finalist at the Rhodes University 2019 Community Engagement Awards in the category “Best Community Partner of the year! Through these awards Rhodes University strives to recognise the achievements of its many community partners which host Rhodes students as volunteers throughout the year. The battle for the award among three finalists was one among good and long-standing friends: current awarenet partner organisation Inkululeko and primary school CM Vellem, a school which awarenet has a historical relationship.

In the citation for the nomination of awarenet as finalist Rhodes University said that: “Thanks to the efforts of a strong leadership team and committed group of student volunteers, awarenet has seen improvement in interactions between student volunteers and learners (..) which has led to high team morale as well as compliance from learners, this is evident from what the team has achieved such as learners editing and presenting their own video presentations.”

CM Vellem at the end won the highly contested award, awarenet congratulates the school on this achievement and hope we will be able to work more with its staff and learners at the school’s computer lab in the future!

awarenet received a recognition for being among the finalists by the Mayor of Makana Mzukisi Mpahlwa. The manager of awarenet, Kjetil Torp, also achieved an award in his capacity as student volunteer manager of the Engaged Citizen Programme of Rhodes University.
awarenet is grateful for the recognitions from Rhodes University and look forward to working with the university’s excellent Community Engagement team the coming academic year!
